Last week, I learnt about GMT and about how the time is different in different countries because of the sun and because the world is not flat. The world is divided into longtitude and latitude and the space between the 2 lines is 30 degrees.Every 30 degrees is 1 hour faster or slower.
A great start to your journal entry Hyeon-Joo. You could've improved it by explaining that GMT is Greenwich Mean Time and that it is in England. You explain the time zones well - an example of how far behind NZ another country is would've helped too. Mrs Breeds.

This week, I learnt why there was two measurments for reaeding tempratures. There is two measurents because the farenheite was used in the early days, and they made celcius because it was much simpler to use. America and some countries use farenheite, but celcius is most common. This is how you convert the temprature from farenheite to celcius.
C=(F-32)X5/9
A great journal entry with a clear explanation. If you'd had time, you could've shown how to use this formula, using an example from your learning today.

Today I learnt about using temperatures to help me add and subtract intergers.
eg.+13- -14=27. because minusing the minus is like taking out the coldness.
I am pleased you learnt this today Hyeon Joo. How do you feel about using it?TC

Today , I solved a problem using guess and check, but I learnt I could use working backwards, narrowing it down and using a known fact.
Great to see that you have recognised that there are smarter strategies to use for different kinds of problems. Why do you think you favour the guess and check strategy?

Yesterday, I refreshed my memory of a histogram, scatter plot and dot& plot graph. I also practiced seeing the difference between a histogram and a bar graph. I learnt that a scatter graph was continuous data.
Remember it is the difference between a histogram and a column graph that we looked at. I would like to see you address the questions that I have asked as this encourages you to think about your thinking.

Today I learnt how to write appropriate questions for surveys. I liked the fact that you could use little asterixes when the question you asked didn't apply to a nother. I also learnt you could use multi questions too.

Today I learnt how to use a box and whisker graph. I really like this graph because it clearly shows the outliers and the average. It comes in handy when you want to find the median beacause it shows a line for the median.
Are you confident in being able to interpret this as well? It is a great graph for showing large amounts of data,.

We are doing our statistical investigations and I'm worried about people not filling in the questions whith a in-depth answer. I am looking foward to reading the answers the people will give to my questionaire. I think it will be interesting.
That is a really valid worry. What do you think you will do with those surveys if people do not fill them in correctly or do not get them back to you? Will you classify them as invalid data or put some more out? Some things to think about.
Yes, when you are asking 'people' for responses they don't always do what you ask. That is why the 'setting' of the question is so important and takes a lot of practice. Keep at it and don't be afraid to test your ideas on others before deciding on your final wording.

Yesterday, the extension maths group did the olympiad. There was 5 questions, but I only got 2 questions right. I am very disappointed, but I learnt that no matter I think the answer is right, I should always think of more than 2 ways to answer the question. I hope I get more questions right next time.
Remember we talked about using another strategy to check your answer. Try that with the Otago coming up next week.

Today, I did an Otago problem solving test. I got 3 out of 5, I didn't make any silly mistakes, but I didn't have enough time to finish the last two questions. I did part of the 4th one, but I didn't get to do the last one. I think I could have done better, if I had had enough time. Next time I think I should not write all of the possibillities for a question like question number 4. I want to improve on my problem solving, so I can solve them much faster.
It is important to balance the time limit to the amount of time you spend on each question. The good thing is that you did get all the ones you attempted correct and that is something to be very proud of.

Today, I did a maths olympiad. I got the last two questions right,(supposedly the hardest...) and got the rest wrong. I think I shouldn't be over confident, and try different strategies.
